America's Agency Investigation

Evolution of US Agencies

The history of America’s agency investigations is a fascinating story of how the United States developed its intelligence and law enforcement capabilities over time. Here is a brief overview of some of the major milestones and events in this history:

The origins of America’s agency investigations can be traced back to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which was established by PresidentOffice of Strategic Services Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942, during World War II, to collect and analyze strategic information for use in war. The OSS was the first centralized agency within the government that could sort through information gathered from spies working on behalf of the country, and it also conducted covert operations and sabotage behind enemy lines1.

After the end of World War II, President Harry Truman abolished the OSS, but soon realized the need for a permanent intelligence agency to counter the threat of the Soviet Union and the Cold War. In 1947, he signed the National Security Act, which created the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), as well as the National Security Council and the Department of Defense. The CIA was tasked primarily with gathering intelligence and international security information from foreign countries, and it also engaged in covert actions and paramilitary operations2.

In 1908, Attorney General Charles Bonaparte created the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), which was the predecessor of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The BOI was responsible for investigating federal crimes, such as interstate commerce violations, antitrust violations, and bank robberies. In 1924, J. Edgar Hoover became the director of the BOI, and transformed it into a professional and efficient organization, with a focus on scientific methods and modern technology. He also renamed it the FBI in 1935. The FBI expanded its jurisdiction and responsibilities over the years, and became involved in investigating a variety of criminal activity, such as terrorism, cybercrime, white collar crimes, public corruption, civil rights violations, and other major crimes345.

In 2018, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) was established as a standalone agency within the Department of Homeland Security, after being a component of the National Protection and Programs Directorate. CISA is the nation’s risk advisor, working with partners to defend against today’s threats and collaborating to build more secure and resilient infrastructure for the future. CISA oversees the protection of critical infrastructure, such as energy, transportation, and communications, and also provides cybersecurity services and guidance to federal agencies and the private sector.

In 1952, President Truman established the National Security Agency (NSA), which is the world leader in cryptology, and provides foreign signals intelligence, cyber security, and information assurance to protect America and its allies from adversaries. The NSA is also responsible for developing and maintaining secure communications systems for the government and the military. The NSA operates under the authority of the Director of National Intelligence, and works closely with other intelligence agencies, such as the CIA and the FBI.

These are some of the most prominent agencies that conduct intelligence and investigations in America, but there are also others, such as the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Secret Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Together, these agencies work to ensure that America remains a safe and prosperous nation, and that its values and interests are defended and advanced around the world
